EN 40
According to the European directive 89/106 covering the structural products, the lighting columns put into the European market must be CE certified according to the harmonized standard EN40-5.
IN order to make the CE mark on the product, in case of lighting columns, a self-declaration is not enough ; It is necessary in fact to obtain an authorization from a notified body, authorized by the Competent Ministry, which after inspections on the design and production methods gives the conformity to the standard; Through periodic inspections it verifies that the conformity to the standard is maintained and he has the possibility to withdraw the authorization.
The CE mark grants design and construction in strict compliance with the standard in force; to this mark correspond traceability and responsibility of the manufacturer and also performances and durability characteristics of the products.
Pali Campion srl, is among the first firms of the filed which obtain the CE mark and it had no problem to comply with the requirements.

Starting from February 1st 2005 all the columns for public lighting in all the areas opened to the vehicular and pedestrian traffic, must comply with the EN 40 European standard and be equipped with CE mark.
The products complying with the EN 40, and only these products, can be equipped with the CE mark which must contain:
CE symbol; manufacturer’s identification; number of the certificate which authorize to put the CE mark (1608 CPD P029); identification of the reference standard (EN40-5); year of marking ; unique (order number and product code)
Furthermore each column must be associated with the documents which define its characteristics and performances for a correct use (declaration of conformity in the order confirmation)
The CE is applied to the column but it doesn’t refer to the electric plant and the lighting fixture
When a product must be marked? Who is Responsible?
The product must be marked when it is placed into the market, that is when it is sold.
- The manufacturer: is responsible of the construction and the good communication of the characteristics of the product.
- The Distributor: buys the marked products and sell them without make any change; he is responsible of good communication of the characteristics of the product.
- The Assembler or transformer: buys part or all the components of the column (shaft and brackets), put them together and sell the finished column. He is responsible of the CE mark
- The installer buys marked item and does a job. He is not responsible of the CE mark, but he remains responsible of the good and appropriate installation
